Local Conservatives are backing residents in their fight against a new 103 bed hotel on North End Road. The hotel would be a five storey building plus two basement levels, located in between the Travelodge and the Grade II Listed Crowther Market building at 282 North End Road.
Residents have expressed concern about the daily impact of the complicated demolition of the existing structure. They fear they will suffer from dust, noise, vibrations and heavy traffic, especially from HGVs. They also feel the scheme is too tall, is an overdevelopment of the site and does not respect the character of the Sedlescombe Conservation Area. We share these concerns, especially the precedent being set by authorising the demolition of a retail unit for a 103 bed hotel.
We care passionately about North End Road and fully support the vibrant and successful market. However, we know that North End Road can be so much better. We are keen to work with local residents and local businesses to produce a long-term strategy for North End Road. However, we do not believe a new hotel is part of that vision and will work with residents to block this scheme.
